US Grappling is pleased to announce our next Referee’s Certification Clinic on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at Triangle Jiu Jitsu in Durham, NC. The clinic will run from 10 AM until 4 PM.
Anyone can observe the class, but we are limiting the number of actual referee candidates. To be considered, you must hold at least a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and must be recommended by another referee, coach, or instructor. You must also have competition experience.
The Referee’s Certification Clinic will cover common issues faced by referees and the proper way to handle such situations, proper scoring, “owning” your mat, protecting competitors, and many more topics. Before the day is through, all candidates will ref live matches, and will be critiqued on their performance. In order to learn to be a ref, one must actually do some reffing!
Prior to completing a certification, referee candidates will fill the role of table worker for a minimum of three events. Referees can be provisionally certified before completing the table working requirement, but will not be permitted to referee at any points events until this has been fulfilled.
Bonus: we need grapplers! We will be holding live matches for the referees to score. Some will simply consist of live rolling, while others will include (scripted) illegal techniques to test the refs. Ever wanted to be a pro wrestler? This may be the closest you get to living your dream!
If you’d like to become a certified US Grappling referee, or would like to be one of the grapplers for the live reffing portion of the day, please email Jarrett to reserve your spot.
